Australian boxing has its next big domestic showdown set for Wednesday, Apr. 22, as Jeff Horn will face Tim Tszyu at a venue to be determined in a 154-pound bout. After a successful defense against Gary Corcoran. Horn came to the United States and was thrashed by Terence Crawford the next year. He moved from welterweight to a 156-pound catchweight to face old man Anthony Mundine in Nov. 2018, knocking Mundine out in 96 seconds.
The bout will no doubt be promoted as one to crown Australia’s best boxer. Which is questionable given the Moloney twins might both be better than either of them. But the Moloney twins also fight in small weight divisions and having signed with Top Rank. Both are likely to move their careers away from Australia. Horn-Tszyu can be genuinely promoted as a fight to crown Australia’s current biggest boxing star, though.
According to Ben Damon, the shortlist for venues includes locations in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Townsville. Tszyu has been the young name on the rise in his home country. The 25-year-old son of Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu turned pro in December 2016 and has looked the part thus far. With solid wins in 2019 over the likes of Denton Vassell, Joel Camilleri, Dwight Ritchie, and Jack Brubaker.
